Dear StreetLight Friends,
Although fall has just begun, StreetLight is already preparing for winter. Many homeless men and women need a warm place to sleep. Due to the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, homelessness is on the rise and many area shelters often find themselves at capacity. With the eviction moratorium lifting, these numbers will continue to escalate. It's our mission to help when there aren't enough beds!
In order to ensure no one is left out in the cold, StreetLight is currently negotiating with local hotels to arrange for alternative overnight accommodations for up to 30 additional homeless men, women, and families seeking shelter from Nov 1-Mar 31. These rooms will also be used to provide temporary housing to homeless guests who test positive for COVID, medically fragile seniors, and families waiting for admission into family shelters. StreetLight will provide transportation to and from the hotels, as well as provide meals and case management to each of the shelter’s overflow guests. We have been blessed with a Virginia State grant to offset some of these costs, but in order to fully fund these extra beds for the next five months StreetLight must raise an additional $50,000.
As temperatures continue to drop each night, our unsheltered neighbors are extremely vulnerable. Sleeping outside or even in a vehicle during the winter is very dangerous. One man’s tent collapsed during a bad snowstorm. By the grace of God, his friends found him in time to dig him out and save his life. He was rushed to the hospital where he recovered from severe frost bite. Sadly, others have not been so fortunate. Too many have not survived the frigid temperatures.
No one should be left out in the cold!
